Derin (17 months) has been showing a great interest in such activities these days.
Transferring pompoms from one bowl to another, good for fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Transferring straws from one jar to another.
We have a cylinder tin box of crayons and he loves taking the crayons out and then putting them back in. He will spend ages doing this if I let him, however I fear that he might harm his eyes with these long and sharp crayons so I thought this might be a safer alternative.
Water transfer using a sponge
He is a very active boy and these days I find it really hard to engage my children in a common play or activity. Thanks to these Montessori activities which he really concentrates on, I get to do something together with my daughter ;)
Happily shared with We Play ,1+1+1=1 and Montessori Monday

What lovely activity ideas. I am going to searchyour blog now for ideas to use with Esther and William. They are 10 months old. Any good place for me to start?
ReplyDeleteJennie, thank you!At 10 months they would really love a treasure basket, if you haven't tried it before. Here's a link about it:

That is such a great idea to occupy toddlers.
ReplyDeleteAs for the treasure baskets - Can definitely recommend those. Its amazing how facinating babies can find the simplest of things. We used to make a pretend sand pit using oatmeal (safer than sand for babies) in a washing up bowl and then fill it with a pine cone, a wooden spoon, metal spiral egg cup etc. Babies can explore the different textures as well as having a root around in the "sand".
Lucy, an oatmeal pit is a great idea, thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm popping over from Childhood 101. I have a 26 month old son and a 8 week old daughter. We started doing Montessori-inspired activities when my son was about a year old and we also found that these types of activities really kept his attention.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy reading what other Montessori-inspired activities people do with their toddlers and so am glad I found your blog
Kate, thank you.I am glad you enjoy our activities :)
ReplyDeleteHi Isil
ReplyDeleteI also appreciated this particular activities when Antek was more or less your son's age. Your little boy looks really cute concentrating on those activities. Have a beautiful week

Great ideas - thank you!
ReplyDeleteOur little boy is of a similar age to Derin and will love the sponge game, not to mention the straws in a jar.
They're cheap and simple, too. Keep the ideas coming!
I'm sending my oldest off to Pre-K, so I'll have to try these with my youngest when it's just he and I!
ReplyDeleteHi Mamas! I have a LO who is just about to turn 1. She still puts EVERYTHING in her mouth and I would love some good early toddler ideas! :)
ReplyDeleteI was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your blog?
ReplyDeleteIts very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images.
Maybe you could space it out better?
