Book Review and Giveaway: Nursies When the Sun Shines

If you are a regular reader of this blog, by now you already know that I'm passionate about breastfeeding. So today I'm very happy to review this book: Nursies When the Sun Shines by Katherine Havener, illustrated by Sara Burrier. This is a picture book about night weaning.

Breastfeeding a toddler is marvellous but if you are getting a little bit tired of all those night wakings and looking for a gentle way to night wean your toddler, this book is just for you.
The book shows a mum, dad and toddler going to sleep and teaches a child that at night time we sleep and nursing happens only when the sun shines.
This is a short story book. In fact, my first impression was that it was just too short. However when I gave it a thought,I decided it is okay : It aims to teach a child that we sleep at night and nurse in the morning and it does this perfectly.
I have not night weaned Derin yet but I gently night weaned Defne when she was a little bit over 2.5 years old. I used the same method and told her that "nursies go to sleep and they will wake up when the sun shines". I think she was pretty much ready by then and accepted it easily. When she woke up I used to offer her water and cuddle her and a few days later, she got it and started sleeping through. This book will be very helpful for night weaning Derin when the time is ripe.
I love that the family in the book are cosleeping with their child. There are so few books depicting breastfeeding and cosleeping families, this book is a joy to read.
The illustrations are just gorgeous!

  12. How cute. We're not at that stage yet (she's only 12 months old) but it'd be lovely to read with her when the time comes.
