Bruges makes for a fantastic and relaxing city break. Here are our top 10 things you must do if you spend a city break in Bruges.
10. Visit the Markt
The Markt sits at the centre of Bruges and is home to the Belfry which is an unmissable architectural feat. You can spy the Belfry across the square – climb it for the best spot to get a panoramic view of the whole city. We’d also recommend going back in the evening to see it spectacularly lit up. Packed with relaxed cafés and restaurants, the Markt is also a lovely place to spend the evening.
9. Ride a Bicycle
Bruges doesn’t have a metro system or any speedy way of getting around, but then it doesn’t need it. You can easily enjoy the city on foot but if you fancy exploring one of the many rural routes outside of the city as a day trip, you can hire a bicycle and see where your adventures take you.
8. Chocoholic Heaven
Belgium is world renowned for the quality of its chocolate. There are plenty of opportunities to try out this national treat. Try Sukerbuyc based in Katelijnestraat for homemade handmade chocolates - and almost everywhere you go to eat and drink will have genuine Belgian hot chocolate on the menu.
7. See the City in Complete Relaxation
Relax, sit back, take a load off and enjoy the city from the comfort of a seat and let someone else do the leg work. You can hire a horse-drawn carriage to take you around the town centre and if you’re lucky, your driver may even want to give you some tourist tips as you travel in style.
6. Culture Shock
If you’re looking for museums and galleries, Bruges is awash. Learn the history of the potato at the quirky Frietmuseum or go to the Volkskundemuseum (Folklore Museum) and learn all about the lives of regular Belgians in times gone by. Galleries include the Magritte Museum that holds most of the city’s finest works of art and the Ixelles Fine Art Museum which has over 13,000 works of art to share.
5. Real Bruges
If you want to see the real living and breathing city the locals love, then the northern part of the city is the area to head for. You’ll find authentic cobbled-street-Bruges with sweet little step-fronted houses and stunning personal touches that give you a real feel for the residents’ lives.
4. Genuine Michelangelo
Bruges is home to the only Michelangelo piece which ever left Italy in his lifetime. Michelangelo’s Madonna with Child is housed in the Church of our Lady and it’s one of those things you’d be sad if you missed.
3. Beach Bathing
Your city break plan may not have involved any beach time but as Bruges is just an hour from the coast it could be a good way of spending a day outside of the city. You simply get the train out to Knokke, Heist-aan-Zee or Oostende for a day of sun.
2. Follow Famous Footsteps
Many visitors to Bruges these days are fans of the famous Colin Farrell film, “In Bruges”. If you’re there to walk the steps of Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes then you can pick up a leaflet from the tourist board that maps all the sites you’ll want to see.
1. End on a High
A lovely way to end your city break would be to take to the water. Climb aboard one of the many boats available around the canals of the city and your tour guide will point out sights you may not even have noticed.
